5 Quick Things: Housekeeping, Newsletter, Not Doing Things, Podcast idea of the Week, and Setting Up the Scale Properly
Chris: Welcome to Five Quick
Things for February 3rd, 2026.
Number one, podcast, housekeeping.
It's been over four months since
the last time I recorded an episode.
Do I want to keep doing this or
should I admit that it's not a thing
I have time or energy for anymore?
It's a fun experiment and pushes
me to use software and ideas I have
with clients so I can understand
what they're doing better.
But I also have a weekly newsletter
I'm enjoying writing because it's
different from the audio production
work I already do for my business.
and ultimately I wanna do a
podcast that's not just me solo.
My work life is me solo and I
need less of that, honestly.
So maybe this is the last episode.
Question mark.
Number two.
I write a weekly newsletter, Like I just
referenced on most Tuesdays, I put out a
weekly newsletter, which you can subscribe
to with links to posts I've written on
my blog and links from around the web
that I found interesting each week.
It's a nice change of context for my
brain to write about with it being
email, I don't worry about subscriber
numbers or clicks to justify doing it.
I just do it for the fun of it.
You can subscribe@buttondown.com
slash lemon casting number three.
I spend too much time not doing things
instead of just doing the thing.
I dunno what this is called, but
I'll deny myself the fun of recording
something like this or just taking a
30 minute break to play some Fortnite
poorly, but end up scrolling or
mindlessly flipping between to do
tasks that I never really get anywhere.
When what I should have done is just
let myself have a bit of fun since my
brain was already distracted and gone on
the idea, and then hopefully come back
more focused on getting the work done.
We'll see what happens when I
stop recording this, I guess.
Number four, random
podcast ID of the week.
I have a file in a Notion that I keep of
ideas for podcasts where I throw things
so I don't start a new show every week.
I think it's just part of the work I do,
where on a show someone will say something
that sparks an idea in my brain that
I can't let go of, even though I don't
need to start a new podcast every week.
Obviously this latest one was to set up
an account on threads or Blue Sky or some
social network that I would just post
to when I wanted to record an episode
with someone in the next 30 minutes.
I'd post a simple who wants to chat right
now with a link to a recording room on
Riverside, and then whoever showed up
first would be who I'd have a conversation
with, or maybe nobody, I guess.
Sounds terrifying, but
also a fun challenge.
Number five, When measuring
things, it's important to have
the scale set up properly.
My son came into my office the other
day with a worried look on his face.
Dad, I just weighed myself it
said I'm only 80 pounds and for an
18-year-old male, I looked it up.
That's not healthy.
I looked at him and said, there's no way.
You're only 80 pounds.
Let's go check the scale.
When we got to the scale, I
saw that it was on the floor
in our bedroom on the carpet.
Did you stand on the scale on the
carpet and did you reset it to
zero before you weighed yourself?
I asked him, uh, yeah, he said,
figuring out what he'd done wrong.
We put the scale on the bathroom
floor, reset it to zero, then he
stood on it again, 142 pounds.
Oh, I guess I'm fine.
He said it's a little cheesy, but it was a
good lesson learned for him and a reminder
for me that most often when I measure
myself or look at numbers to figure out
if something is healthy or working, I
really don't have the scale set properly.
It's biased in one direction or another.
Slanted to favor my successes and
forget my mistakes, or sometimes
the opposite when I'm down on
myself and don't wanna remember
the good when wallowing in the bad.
Sometimes I need to take the scale
to the bathroom and put it on level
ground and do a proper assessment.
That's it for this one.
Five Quick Things is a mini episode of
Conversations with My Night Brain, which
is a podcast I idea I had that I'm still
haven't followed through on, just so I can
put stuff out in the world without having
to have it all figured out quite yet.
If you'd like to be on an episode
of Conversations with My Night
Brain, I don't know if I'm doing
it, so maybe don't get in touch.
I'd love to chat with you, and that was
five quick Things for February 3rd, 2026.
Thanks for listening and watching.
